Governor Wise Announces Expansion of Corridor H

Charleston, W.Va. – Gov. Bob Wise today announced that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has given approval for 42 additional miles of Appalachian Corridor H in Tucker, Grant and Hardy counties.

"This is truly a significant event for eastern West Virginia," Wise said. "DOH has been planning and studying this road for many years, giving every consideration to historical and environmental issues."

This Record of Decision (ROD) allows the Division of Highways to proceed with final design, right of way and construction of the segment from Davis to Moorefield.

"Over the long history of Corridor H, no one has been a greater supporter than Sen. Robert C. Byrd," Wise added. "Thanks to his vision and hard work, Corridor H is becoming a reality one step at a time."

Transportation Secretary Fred VanKirk stressed that this routing does not affect any environmental or historical resources. "It is our policy to build environmentally sound highways," VanKirk said. "Corridor H will, at no time, be located inside the Greenland Gap."

Wise also announced that DOH has notified design firms to begin final design on a 16-mile segment of Corridor H from Davis to Bismarck. Addition of this segment means that nearly half of the route is complete, under construction or in the final stages of design.
