WVDOH CONDUCTS PUBLIC HEARING ON KERENS TO PARSONS SECTION OF CORRIDOR H

Hambleton, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) today hosted a workshop public hearing to receive comments on the approved Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement (SDEIS) for the Kerens to Parsons section of Corridor H.

The workshop public hearing took place in the cafeteria of the Tucker Valley Elementary/Middle School in Hambleton from 4 to 7 p.m.

Representatives from both the WVDOH and Michael Baker, Jr., Inc., the environmental consulting firm for Corridor H, were available to discuss the alternatives, address questions and formally record comments on several alternatives under consideration to avoid impacts to the Corricks Ford Battlefield.

State Highway Engineer Joe Deneault said, “At a public meeting in September 2000, we presented 13 possible alignments and received public comments on those alignments. We reviewed those comments and narrowed the number of new alternatives to four plus the original preferred alignment. We presented those four alternatives here today.”

“The Division of Highways completed the Battlefield Avoidance SDEIS for the Corricks Ford Battlefield and submitted it to the Federal Highway Administration. The Federal Highways Administration recently approved the SDEIS and we have requested comments from the general public and state and federal resource agencies on the SDEIS and proposed alternatives,” Deneault said.

According to Deneault, all of the Battlefield Avoidance alternatives that have been reviewed will not have adverse effects on historical properties. The major environmental concerns WVDOH has encountered are with the Monongahela National Forest and stream impacts.
