WVDOH AND POLINO CONTRACTING, INC. WIN THE FIRST PLACE AWARD FOR THE WEST VIRGINIA CONSERVATION DEVELOPER AND CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

Charleston, W. Va. – The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) and Polino Contracting, Inc. have won the first place award for the 2001 West Virginia Conservation Developer and Contractor of the Year. The recognized project is the construction of Corridor H in Hardy County, W. Va. of the Potomac Valley Soil Conservation District.

The West Virginia Conservation Developer and Contractor of the Year Award is sponsored by the West Virginia Soil Conservation District Supervisors Association, West Virginia Division of Environmental Protection and the West Virginia Contractors Association. This award is designed to recognize developers and contractors who are effectively planning and implementing soil and water conservation practices.

As the amount of land developed to serve the needs of commerce and industry rapidly increases, so does the need to maintain soil stability and water quality around the construction site. West Virginia's rugged terrain including steep slopes, erosive soils and abundant streams doesn't always make this important job an easy one.

Best management practices used in the project to protect water quality include seeding and mulching, berms to prevent erosion, sediment ponds, stream diversions, slope drains, streambank protection and silt fence. The project was noted for proper installation and maintenance of erosion and sediment control practices in an area of rugged and diverse terrain.
