Corridor H Environmental Assessment Approved
Charleston, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Division of Highways today announced that the Federal Highway Administration has approved the environmental assessment for the Middle South Branch Valley rural historic avoidance alignment. The preferred alternative route included in the approval will pass just to the north of Moorefield and south of the southern boundary of the historic district.
The environmental assessment was required by the Office of the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places. The Keeper determined in late 1998 that a large area north of Moorefield contained a significant historic district.
"Our first environmental impact statement on Corridor H would have taken the roadway through the middle of the historic district. After the ruling by the Keeper, DOH developed a plan to avoid the historic area," said State Highway Engineer Joe Denault. "This approval means that our alternative route around the historic district has been approved and is ready for public comment."
A public meeting on the approved environmental assessment will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 12, in the old gymnasium at Moorefield High School. A public hearing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 19, in the cafeteria of Moorefield High School.
Copies of the environmental assessment can be obtained by calling Highways' Environmental Office at (304) 558-2885.
