Governor Celebrates Progress of Corridor H Construction
ELKINS, W.Va. Gov. Cecil H. Underwood and Sam Beverage, acting secretary of the West Virginia Department of Transportation, today visited the Laurel Mountain Road construction site to celebrate progress of construction along Corridor H, a project local residents commonly refer to as the "road to everywhere."
The governor and Beverage began the celebration with a news conference and a caravan tour of Corridor H for dignitaries and the media. The tour was to be followed immediately by a public reception at Davis and Elkins College.
"I am pleased to be here today to celebrate the work that has resumed," Governor Underwood said. "The courts have affirmed it, our agreement with Corridor H opponents confirmed it, and, as your Governor, I am here today to move this project forward. We are going to complete Corridor H as a four-lane highway."
"The negotiated settlement with opponents of this project moves us past endless litigation, into construction and toward completion," the Governor continued. "Today we celebrate resumed construction and our march toward a completed four-lane highway from Weston to Virginia."
Governor Underwood announced the Division of Highways is ready to advertise for bids for construction of two projects between Baker and Moorefield. The DOH has been working on an amended record of decision (ROD), which was approved today by the Federal Highway Administration.
"This decision helps us take a giant step toward completion of this highway," Governor Underwood said. "We will advertise for the acceptance of bids on additional contracts in the Moorefield to Baker section tomorrow. Construction on the eastern end of Corridor H is about to begin."
Acting Secretary Beverage said of the continued construction, "The Division of Highways is extremely pleased that Corridor H is once again under construction and on its way to completion. Corridor H is a vital piece of the Appalachian Corridor System."
"The DOH, along with Governor Underwood, is dedicated to improving the highway system in West Virginia and offering residents and visitors safer and more convenient roads on which to travel," Beverage said. "I commend the governor on his continued dedication to this project."
