Corridor H Agreement Releases Money for Recreational Trails Program
Charleston, W. Va. Officials at the West Virginia Division of Highways announced today that funding designated for recreational trail improvements along Corridor H in Grant, Randolph and Tucker Counties have been released, thanks to the recent Corridor H settlement agreement.
In the Corridor H Environmental Impact Study, the West Virginia Division of Highways committed to constructing bicycling and pedestrian trails from Elkins to Mount Storm.
Because of the previous injunction, which stopped construction of the project, the proposed trail was unable to be completed. This latest victory in the battle to build Corridor H allows for the completion of engineering design and construction on the trail. It will begin in Elkins and lead visitors through Parsons, Blackwater Canyon, Thomas, Davis and on to Mount Storm.
"These trails are ideal for many uses, such as bicycling, walking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and wheelchair recreation. Eco-tourism is a rapidly growing industry and rail-trails are a vital part of that," said Highways Commissioner Sam Beverage.
According to the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, rail-trails are multi-purpose public paths created from abandoned railroad corridors with flat or gentle grade land. These trails are perfect for both the beginner and experienced outdoor families. They bring historic structures, such as train stations, bridges, tunnels, mills and canals to the public for educational enjoyment.
Currently, there are twenty-nine rail-trails in West Virginia. According to Commissioner Beverage, "The West Virginia Division of Highways is committed to continuing development of this vital program and bringing the beauty and history of this state to all individuals."
