Kerens to Parsons Preferred Alternative Announced
The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) announced February 25 that alternative DF is the preferred alternative for the Kerens to Parsons section of Corridor H.
State Highway Engineer Joe Deneault explained that environmental agencies concurred in the choice of the preferred alternative, allowing the WVDOH to proceed with the preparation of the Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement.
"Alternative DF was selected as the preferred alternative for the Kerens to Parsons section for several reasons," Deneault said. "First, alternative DF is the least environmentally damaging option. In addition, this alternative avoids causing adverse effects to the Corricks Ford Battlefield, avoids use of sensitive resources and is consistent with the Corridor H Settlement Agreement."
Deneault continued, "Members of the general public sent more than 600 letters to the Division of Highways regarding this matter. They indicated they did not support this alternative in three of the 600 letters."
Deneault explained that alternative DF is 15.4 miles in length. It begins near Kerens and proceeds north crossing Clifton Run Road (Randolph County Route 7), Wilmouth Run and Pheasant Mountain Road (Randolph County Route 3). The alternative continues northeasterly through the Monongahela National Forest and crosses the South Branch of Haddix Run Road and US 219. At that point the alternative provides access north of Fools Run before crossing WV 17 and WV 72. The alternative continues north of Holly Meadows/Riverbend Estate, crosses the Cheat River and proceeds southeast to tie into Mackeyville Road (Tucker County 219/4).
Deneault explained the next steps in the process are the preparation of the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) and receipt of the Record of Decision (ROD). The FEIS is expected to be complete by April 2002, and the ROD is expected from the Federal Highways Administration by June 2002.
