WVDOH Provide Cyclists with More Options
Cyclists will soon benefit from even more bike trails in eastern West Virginia.
The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) is developing two new bike paths along Corridor H to provide both fervent and recreational cyclists with safe and convenient places to ride.
According to the WVDOH, the first path is a paved lane on the shoulder of the Corridor H roadway and is designed for avid cyclists who are interested in "clocking" their rides. It will be separated from moving traffic by a rumble strip and denoted by both markings on the pavement and signs posted on the roadway. The path will be available to the public once the road is completed and open to traffic.
The second trail, from Elkins to Mount Storm, is intended for more leisurely cyclists and families. It is part of the "Rails-to-Trails" initiative where the WVDOH converts existing railroad beds to bike paths by paving portions of the trail and adding gravel to others.
"We are working closely with Tucker and Randolph county officials and in conjunction with ongoing enhancement programs to build small parking areas, make restroom facilities available and ensure that these trails are safe, convenient and attractive to cyclists of all abilities," said State Highway Engineer Joe Deneault.
In February 2001, the WVDOH will be letting the first contract to build the path from Elkins to Mount Storm. The estimated completion date for the trail is late 2003.
