Vandals Delay Construction of Corridor H
Two Corridor H construction sites were vandalized late last month causing up to $500,000 in damages and delaying construction at one of the sites until repairs can be made.
Polino Contracting's site at Kerens experienced major damage to machines that had been driven into one another and also into banks of dirt. Countless windows were destroyed, every fire extinguisher on the site was discharged and the tires on several pieces of equipment were slashed.
"It looked like the aftermath of a war-zone out here. We've never had any trouble in Elkins. It's hard to believe it happened here,"John West with Polino Contracting told a reporter with the Elkins Intermountain. "People may not realize this not only hurts the contractor, it also hurts the livelihood of a lot of workers. If it's somebody against Corridor H, this really isn't the way to go about fighting it."
The Kanawha Stone construction site off of Leading Creek Road sustained similar damages totaling between $300,000 and $350,000. Art King, owner of Kanawha Stone, also told the reporter, "Whoever did this, they're not going to win." Kanawha Stone is offering a $10,000 reward for any information leading to a conviction of the responsible parties.
State Highway Engineer Joe Deneault said, "We provide residents ample opportunity to express their opinions. In addition to the public meetings we have conducted, there is an official Corridor H website where we encourage residents submit their comments for consideration. I'm sorry that these people chose not to use one of these appropriate venues for expressing their discontent and elected to disrupt the lives of others instead."
The Corridor H website is located at www.wv.corridorh.com.
